Alternative Energy Power Is Our Future!
Alternative energy power sources such as wind power are becoming more globally embraced. In 2007, around 20,000 megawatts of wind were put up around the world. That is enough wind to power over 6 million homes. A recent report issued by the Bush administration stated that for under 2 cents a day, per household, Americans could harness 300 gigawatts of wind by the year 2030.
Unfortunately most of the strides in the alternative energy power field are being made by foreign countries, due to years of funding cuts by the United States congress. However more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon so to speak, as more strides are being made and more is learned regarding alternative energy power.
There are theories that wind will outrank nuclear power in the near future. Another option that is gaining favor is solar power. Wind technology and solar technology may even be used in conjunction someday, as they are able to share the same power lines.
If the results of the Bush administration report on alternative energy power were to come to pass, it would mean that by 2030, carbon dioxide emissions would be reduced by nearly 25%. Natural gas usage would be reduced by 11%. Cumulative water consumption tied to generating electricity would be reduced by a massive 4 trillion gallons. Not to mention, this new industry could possibly create 500,000 new jobs in the United States. That is something to get excited about!
This all means that we could realistically have an electric grid built almost entirely on alternative energy power sources in less than 30 years. There would be no more nasty greenhouse gases and little if any fuel cost. There would be no crazy energy price inflation, no more radioactive waste and very little dependence on foreign countries and their oil resources. While there is a good possibility all of this could come to pass, our country will need strong, innovative leaders to make it happen. In the meantime, we are seeing other countries out spending us in the research and development area of alternative energy power.
Here is another point to ponder. Very few people realize that the generation of electricity accounts for nearly half of all water withdrawals in our nation. In the western states, water is pretty scarce, and on the verge of getting more scarce due to climate change or natural climate fluctuation. By 2030, alternative energy power sources, like wind and solar could cut water consumption by 450 billion gallons a year, and 150 billion of that could be saved in the western states where it is needed the most.

Those numbers alone should prompt us all to support alternative energy power funding and research. We should try to elect representatives that share our common goals. Health care and insurance are important issues, but they wouldn’t be nearly so important in the future if we could prevent health problems from developing in the first place. If we make our planet a cleaner place to inhabit everyone will be healthier. The use of alternative energy power on a large scale can help us accomplish those goals.
